Favorites: Characters

I feel like, when an author likes a character, it might be for different reasons than when a reader likes a character. I sometimes struggle to get all a character’s dimensions on the page (see: book 1, Jeanine), but sometimes I’m surprised by what emerges as I write, and it’s usually in the latter case that I wind up with favorites.

There are a few constants. Tris is always my favorite, because she’s such a complicated girl— at times humorless and merciless and relentlessly hard on herself, at other times brave and compassionate and emotional. I have also loved watching her develop a sense of humor over time. There are so many things I like about her.

When I first started writing Four, he instantly became far more than I thought he would be, with an endless supply of secrets and a history that became more and more complicated as the story went on. I would say more but I’m not going to talk about the third book much— ask me again in October.

Those are sort of lame answers, though, so let’s go with favorite side characters, shall we? They change from book to book.

After book 1, my favorite side character was Tris’s mom.

After book 2, it was Peter. (Or Christina? Or Evelyn?)

And after book 3, it’s Caleb.

(ETA: Also, don’t take that to mean that none of these characters do awful things…because I still end up liking characters even if they do awful things, as long as those awful things come from a complicated place rather than a simplistic one.)

So I’ll just leave you with that.

Honestly, I’m not so sure why people think Matt or Logan should audition for Tobias. Don’t get me wrong, I love Matt Lanter & Logan Lerman. They’re both wonderful actors and I really do like them. Fuck, I love 90201 & Percy Jackson. But just cause I love the series, I’m not going to automatically want them to play as my favorite character. I want someone who can actually be the character, not just act it.

Guys, in my opinion, Matt cannot pass as an 18 year old. I’m sorry. But he’s too broad and tall for people to shrug off as a puberty thing. Once again, I do love him, it’s just that I don’t think he’d make the best Tobias. And for Logan, oh my goodness. I was really ecstatic to hear that some people want him to play as Tobias, but now thinking about it, I’m going to have to say that I don’t agree with their opinion.

To me, Tobias is an 18 year old that has a sharp look to him. His face is rugged and defined, still showing signs of youth, but cannot be mistaken for a 14 year old. I always imagined him to look mature for his age. And Logan just doesn’t fit my standards. I’m sorry. Logan has this really cute face that I can’t imagine to play as a strict instructor who isn’t afraid to throw knives at his crush.

So yeah. These are the two people I’m hoping for as Tobias.

I’m going to get a lot of haters for this, but lol whatever.

I’m liking these guys… I really really like Max Irons, but I’m also not 100% sold. 


Thanks Tink and Asheathes for infoing me in on who the heck Steven McQueen is :) I’m not sold on him either. But I do love this picture of him as Four.
